DATA BASIS FOR AVALANCHE WARNINGS

SNOW AND WEATHER INFORMATION WITH NEW PRECISION

As soon as the first snow falls in the mountains, the risk of avalanches becomes an issue. Avalanches repeatedly lead to serious accidents. Over the years, regional and national avalanche warning services and specialized software applications have been developed to reduce this danger. These provide ski tourers with crucial information to help them prepare for their mountain adventure. If the risk is too high, alternative summits or routes can be selected or the tour can be canceled altogether. Locally, there are also avalanche commissions in many places, which decide on road closures in the event of danger. In addition to sound expertise and knowledge of the current structure of the snowpack, avalanche forecasters also need up-to-date weather data to prepare avalanche reports.

Some of this data is used directly and some is incorporated into the relevant calculation models. This weather data is of the utmost importance, as incorrect information can have serious consequences. This is why the data basis must be highly accurate and reliable – MetGIS forecasts.

METGIS PRO+

DASHBOARD FOR THE AVALANCHE WARNING SERVICE

The most popular MetGIS tool for avalanche warning services is the interactive MetGIS Pro+ dashboard. On one hand, this provides an ideal overview of the large-scale weather situation in the target area, while on the other hand it is also possible to zoom in to great detail. At the same time, weather time series for the next 10 days can be called up for any point in the area “at the touch of a button”. Important weather parameters on the dashboard that are relevant for avalanche warnings are temperature, precipitation (rain, fresh snow), wind, cloud cover and sunshine duration. High-resolution maps of the current snow cover (based on satellite and model data) are also available.

WEATHER-APIS FROM METGIS

ESPECIALLY FOR WINTER APPLICATIONS

Some avalanche warning services operate their own avalanche simulation models or use visualization systems and web platforms where avalanche warning information can be viewed by the public. All of these can be supplied with high-quality weather data via our APIs. Apart from the weather parameters of our dashboard, the APIs offer a wide range of additional information that is of particular interest in the cold season (snow line, zero degree line, new snow density, freezing rain, wet bulb temperature, etc.). In addition, we provide APIs for high-resolution terrain data (30 meter x 30 meter grid) containing information on lake height, slope inclination and slope orientation. Combined with weather data (especially wind, fresh snow), it is possible to derive information on avalanche risk even in the smallest of spaces.

WEATHER APIs FROM METGIS

POINT API

Professional API with ultra-precise weather forecasts for the whole world, accurate to 30 meters.

MAPS API

High-resolution weather layers for existing maps (e.g. Google Maps) or area forecasts.

HIST API

Weather data from the past with extremely high resolution.
